Ssshhh!  I’m about to share a secret recipe with you.  A recipe that will make any tween or teen think you are “Awesome-sauce.” It’s summer, and the kids are bored, right?  Using ingredients you likely have in your kitchen and bathroom, you can easily make custom flavored lip glosses for a fraction of the cost in the store.  This craft can be done at birthday parties, sleep-overs, or just for fun. Adults love it, too!

What you’ll need:

1 tablespoon vegetable shortening

1 drink mix packet, such as Kool-Aid (choose your flavor and color)

1/4 teaspoon hot water

What you do:

Mix the in a bowl until smooth and set to the side.  In another bowl, mix the water and drink mix (don’t add any sugar!).

Still with me here?  Good.  Now start adding small amounts of the juice/water mixture to the shortening until it is the color you want. When finished, place it into tiny jars, empty lip gloss containers, ziplock bags…Anything that will hold it.

Wasn’t that easy?  You can add tiny bits of glitter to your new lip gloss (a little bit goes a LONG way), decorate the jars with paper, ribbon, and beads and give them as gifts or wear a new flavor each day.

Bonus Project!

I couldn’t let you go with just one project.  Let me show you a little something to do with all those rolls of pretty duct tape you have.

What you’ll need:

Scissors

Duct tape

Bobby pins

What you do:

Cut a length of tape twice as long as you want your bow to be (about 4″ for a hair bow).  Lay the tape down, sticky side up, and fold the ends in to meet in the middle.  You should now have the decorative side of the tape showing on both sides.  With your fingers on the outer edges in the middle, pinch it together to shape a bow.  Cut a 2″ strip of tape length-wise and wrap it (sticky side down) around the center where you pinched it together.  Slide a bobby pin into the back, and pop it in your hair!

Make this bow in several sizes and use it for more than just your hair.  You could even make a smaller version to decorate your lip gloss jar!

Summertime sparks an intuitive collection of photos propelled by children and the everyday joys of water, toys and endless amounts of energy. It’s not hard to find a little inspiration right outside your door. Snapping photos of  summer playtime can ignite even the tiniest bit of nostalgia within minutes – and last a lifetime. The perfect key elements to great summertime photos are literally just a click away. The summer world is ready to go – just add children!

Waterworks at the pool

Great pool poses are instant classics.  From up close face shots, splashing, jumping, swimming and playing, children are aqua-batic tricksters waiting for a photo op.

Beaches are for bums (and children)

Pool time may be the highlight of a child’s day, but they are second rate when it comes the beach. Salty water, fish, shells and sandcastles can fill a child’s summertime dreams at night. Mention those sandy shores to any tike and watch those eyes light up!

Any toy will do, thankyouverymuch!

The great thing about children is that they do not need a large body of water to occupy their summertime days and keep your camera busy making memories.  Bubbles, water hoses (and water toys), sidewalk chalk and lemonade stands provide ample ingredients for photo magic (and fun!) during the blissful summer days.

Photo Opts.. June’s Best Photos

Although Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial summer kick-off holiday, June is the first full month of the Summer Season. The month of June means that elementary and high schools are finishing up their academic years and families are heading out on vacation to engage in any number of summer oriented activities. In this post I wanted to highlight some of the images that not only allow us to think of the summer season’s first full month, but those we find inspiring as well.

Activity #1: Picnicking and Barbequing: In my opinion there’s nothing better than the aroma one smells of food cooking on the grill or fresh fruit and salads coming out of a picnic basket located on the beach or by a lake. Hot Dogs, Hamburgers, Chicken, Pasta Salads, Watermelon, and Fresh Baked Cookies are all some of my favorite summer-inspired dishes, what are some of yours?

Activity #2: Camping & Fishing: One of my most memorable and inspiring summers came when I was a little boy and my uncle took me fishing on the lakes of the Adirondack Mountains. We’d fix ourselves a camp site, pitch the tent, make a fire very night and roast marshmallows under the starry night sky. Each morning, we’d wake up and launch our three-person row boat off the shore and set out on a fishing adventure that began with Sun Fish and ended with Trout. Have memorable moments from your childhood, ever inspired you as a parent?

Activity #3: The Beach: For those of you who prefer crashing waves and beautiful sunsets over the calm and still beauty of a lake-based atmosphere, then the beach is the place to be. As the waves crash on the sandy shores, I think from an artistic perspective and strongly believe that a new canvas unfolds during each tidal cycle. One of things I love about the beaches here on the East Coast is that during the month of June, tidal cycles tend to deliver the clearest water during the summer months, and that clarity is what inspires me.

Father’s Day is a special time of year when families come together to show their Dads how important they are. They go to work, mow the lawn and make sure that no one fights over the remote (because he, of course, is in control of that). They kill spiders and pests, play catch, and eat the last slice of pizza (because it can’t go to waste, right?). So what better way is there to show that monster-shooing, piggy-back ride giving, barbecue-grilling guy how much he is appreciated other than with a homemade Father’s Day gift? Check out these best photos for different and unique Father’s Day ideas:

Make Daddy a Card

Fathers-Day-Craft-1

The great thing about cards is that they are completely customizable! You could write a poem or a letter on the inside, or make a pop-out picture that scares him when he opens it. It can be any color, texture, or size, and you can most often use whatever is lying around the house (or the yard, for that matter). The best part about making your own card is that it can say whatever you want it to say and you don’t have to flip through 10 or 15 different cards at the store trying to find the perfect one… your Dad will like this card best because it was made especially for him.

Play a Father’s Day Game

Spending family time together doesn’t always have to be stressful (it’s fun too). Create a treasure hunt and make your dad work for his gift or try putting together a quiz or challenge your family members to “Who knows Father best?”

Make Dad Something Useful

Whether your Dad works in an office or out in the field, there’s always something useful you can make for him. This desk organizer is cute and handy! Other great ideas are mouse pads out of craft foam, drink coasters out of craft sticks, or picture frames out of whatever you can find!
