Hello there! It’s the Imikimi Team here, and we’re happy to have you back after the long Memorial Day weekend. Today we’re featuring an artist whose art is different than most everything you’re bound to find, and in the absolute best way possible. All too often there is preconceived notion that art must all be “artsy” and “serious,” and that anything evoking whimsy and humor must not be art. Thankfully there’s a fantastic illustrator by the name of Marc Johns.
Marc’s illustrations are immediately friendly, fun, and accessible anyone who likes to smile. It isn’t just an occasional instance in which you’ll find yourself smiling at one of his drawings, but rather it’s likely that you’ll find your funny bone tickled by each and every one of them.
Lovingly crafted with ink and watercolor, Marc’s works are lovingly and simply made. Taking just a few minutes to peruse his frequently updated blog, you’ll see dozens upon dozens of his illustrations. He tends to work in the traditional medium, writing humorous (and apt) captions to describe the even more humorous figures. For instance, there’s the immediately smile-inducing image “Distinct Advantage.”
By now, it’s easy to tell that all of Marc John’s works are clearly made with the sole intention of bringing smiles to the faces of thousands of people who enjoy his works, perhaps even millions. His drawings have garnered enough attention and demand that he now sells original artworks and prints in his online shop. There is a book called, ironically, Serious Drawings.
There are even those who are such big fans of the drawings that they’ve gone to the extreme of immortalizing the piece by getting it forever imprinted in their skin as a tattoo. And there aren’t just 2 or 3 people who adore his work enough to do this, but rather dozens. If you follow Marc John’s blog on a regular basis, newly submitted tattoos are posted often. And much like Marc’s illustrations, these tattoos are clearly meant for fun and enjoyment, bringing a sense of fun and playfulness to an alternative artform.
Take a lesson from Marc to realize that sometimes the unbeaten path is the route which should be taken, if that path happens to appeal to you. Originality is fantastic attribute, especially when not intentional. Craft the works that you find to “click” with your personality, and never be afraid to venture into unknown territory.
Thank you so much for taking the time to stop by the official blog of Imikimi! We’ll have more features and crafts for your eyes in the coming days, weeks, months, and beyond, so stay stuned!
