Delve into Creativity with DepthcoreDecember 1, 2011 at 11:00 am | Posted in Conventional Art | Leave a comment
Hello, faithful readers! It’s the Imikimi Team here, and we’re happy to have you back again for another helpful feature. With the holidays in full swing, and the feeling of togetherness that comes about, today we’re going to highlight an amazing digital art community called Depthcore.
Founded nearly a decade ago by Justin Maller and Kevin Stacey, Depthcore is a collective of digital artists spanning the entire globe. Counting themselves as members are the best of the best in the design and illustration world. But this is not just any art community where users sign up and post as they wish. Instead, Depthcore works more uniquely, releasing “Chapters” (or collections) every few months. These chapters contain anywhere from 50 to 150 pieces of digital art, all revolving around a singular theme or idea. Themes are most often a single word, such as “Her,” “Empire,” “Requiem,” “Voodoo,” etc. No restrictions are made, which leaves the artist with free reign to interpret the idea as they see fit.
Text-heavy, this web page is certainly not. Just big and bold preview images which immediately grab your attention and don’t let go. To be directed to the chapter packs, click the “Our Work” link in the upper left. Every preview is practically begging to be clicked, transporting you to work’s containing chapter. Inside are previews of all of the works inspired by that particular theme. We’ve all had that “just one more and I’ll be done” thought which prods at us when rummaging through bags of potato chips, and that’s the exact same though which comes to mind with browsing through the art: “just one more.” Thankfully, latter is more likely to replenish your creativity than your fat stores, so there’s no need to resist!
While Depthcore is a fairly private community of artists, extremely tight-knit and inclusive, that does not mean that its treasures are only open to members. This is a site best used for inspiration, for seeing what great artists can do when given full creative control. The artists are not compensated in any way for their contributions to chapters; they simply have a passion for what they do and wish to share it with the world, which is something we should all do a little more.
The potential inspiration which can be gleaned from this site is off the charts. With nearly 50 “chapters” released under its belt, Depthcore is an essential reference for renewing your creativity. Stop on by every few months to see their newest offering. When you do, take a moment to think about that chapter’s theme, what it means to you. What would you create if given the chance to submit work to their community? Would you squander it by becoming mired in the expectations of others, or would you take that opportunity to express what speaks to you?
We’d like to thank you so much for stopping by, and hope that you will continue every day in your efforts to bettering yourself as an artist, just as we will. And we hope that these features continue to be helpful resources for inspiration and learning. Please come back again soon and we’ll have much more in store!
